ANNUAL MEETING REPORTS ON ANOTHER EXCELLENT YEAR

This year's Annual General Meeting of the Carnival Committee was held at the Older Persons Welfare Centre last week. The retiring Chairperson Michele Smallshaw thanked everyone for their

efforts during the past year which led to another very successful carnival. In spite of a poor weather forecast the day remained fine ensuring an excellent day for everyone especially the thousands of people who lined the streets and enjoyed the activities in the showground field.

FINANCIAL REPORT

The treasurer, Ann Steval reported on a financially successful year which meant that the income not only covered the £8,500 need to stage the carnival but also enabled the committee to donate a total of £3,000 to this year's beneficiaries – the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Otley Science Festival.

The treasurer expressed her thanks to the committee members, the beneficiaries, local Councillors and many other supporters for their contributions in terms of both time and cash. She particularly thanked the carnival day street collectors especially committee members Joan Birkett and Sandie Smith who together collected £107 winning the prize for the best collection in a bucket but who cannot receive the trophy as they have now moved to Spain with all of our thanks and best wishes.

Election of Officers

Geoff Wright takes over from Michele Smallshaw as Chairman and all the other committee posts were confirmed. The President this year will be the Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Mary Vickers.

Geoff joined all present in thanking Michele for the excellent work she has done in her 2 years stint as Chairperson and he went on to look forward to the 2012 carnival which will coincide with the Queen's Jubilee and the Olympic Games. Our aim will be to make next year a very special carnival year with a massive parade supported by all the schools, businesses and voluntary agencies not only in Otley but the surrounding area as well.
