Record parade planned for Otley Carnival 2014
Thousands of residents and visitors are expected to help Otley celebrate its annual carnival in style later this month and local shops are busy planning their window displays for the Window Dressing competition which will be judged on Sunday 15th June. Over 30 businesses are joining in and their contribution should make a valuable contribution to the atmosphere of fun and celebration in the town on Carnival Day.
The annual fundraiser will begin at 1.15pm on Saturday 21st June, when a parade featuring flamboyantly decorated floats, walking tableaux and other entries sets off from Wharfedale Farmers Auction Mart. These include eight schools, seven bands and drumming groups, Westgate Cheerleaders, along with a traction engine and the St.John’s Ambulance on their bikes!
The parade will be led by Otley Bellman Terry Ford, followed by dignitaries in open cars, this year’s procession is set to be one of the biggest in the carnival’s history and will end, as always, at the attractions-packed Bridge End showground.
Otley Carnival Committee chairman Wendy Corden said: “This year’s carnival will be a big day for many people from the town and surrounding area as it marks the beginning of two weeks of jam packed fun and excitement as the Tour de France will be going through Otley on the 5th July. This year the parade will be led by a contingent of local cyclists. Apart from the hundreds of participants in the parade there will be many visitors crowding the streets to see the floats, bands and other entries before following them to the Bridge End showground to join in the many activities there. Our main aim, as always, is to ensure that all the children, of all ages, have a really great day. The amount of support given each year by local businesses, schools, youth organisations, agencies, politicians and individuals is amazing. Although we try to acknowledge the sponsors and other major supporters in the programme, it is impossible to list them all. All we need now is the sun to shine!”
Proceeds this year will go to Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Otley Action for Older People and the Otley Children’s Centre.
