JANUARY 2009 Our Family History section continues to expand with local inquiries and those farther afield. Mrs Hannon from Ararat, Victoria, Australia visited the Museum at the start of her research and we were able to provide her with documentary and photographic evidence of her family roots in Otley, including a photograph which included her grandfather, a member of the Otley Harriers Athletic Club. Using our extensive collection of newspaper cuttings we provided another visitor from Surrey with information on her great uncle who was Town Clerk in Otley in the 1940s. Relevant information from our archive was passed on to another researcher whose ancestors had lived at Low Hall, Menston. Local people continue to call in to the Museum with a variety of requests: Can you tell me anything about my property? Do you have any photographs of the Washburn Valley? Our archive is a mine of information. We are currently arranging a visit for a group from the Barnsley area and we are preparing material on ‘Old Otley’ for an Otley group. Tip for the Credit Crunch - taken from one of the Dawson Account Books in our archive: In 1847 a couch made by William Dawson for R Dickinson was paid for in potatoes! |
