Heritage Day Report

OCTOBER 2008

HERITAGE OPEN DAY on 13 September

Despite a variety of local events and the fact that the newspaper published the wrong times and days we had a reasonable number of visitors showing interest in the postcard display.

One visitor in particular was surprised to find a family connection and is returning to find out more. Some railway enthusiasts found our slide show of great personal interest.

Thanks to all who came.

‘The Wharfedale’ publicised the current threat to our accommodation with a front-page article. Although not absolutely factually correct we hope it draws attention to the fact that Otley is in danger of losing its heritage. A spread in the following week’s paper was excellent, giving some idea of the breadth of the Museum’s archive and the work done by volunteers.

Recent visitors have hailed from Australia, South Africa, Canada and Europe; in this country we have received people from Devon and Kent as well as more local visitors.

Congratulations on a superb collection and
on the modern guardians looking after them’.

Family historians continue to use the museum archive, aided by our two expert volunteers.

Otley pubs past and present have generated interest from several angles and at least three people are coming in to do their research.
