No Provision for  the Museum in the future

REFURBISHMENT OF THE CIVIC CENTRE

The decision by Otley Town Council to make no provision for the Museum in the refurbished Civic Centre is of great concern, especially as earlier plans allocated space for us. We have been told to vacate the premises by September 2009.

Otley Museum is managed and run entirely by volunteers, dedicated to conserving, recording and interpreting historical resources for the benefit of this and future generations. As such it is a major contributor to the life and needs of the town. The potential loss of knowledge and collections accumulated over 50 years is a threat to Otley’s own heritage.

The unique character of this Museum is represented by several significant collections. The objects, photographs and documents relate to the development of Otley & District since the prehistoric period.

The number of visitors passing through its doors is only one measure of a museum’s success. The reputation of Otley Museum continues to grow through

  • Academic links (currently with Bradford University Biological Anthropology Research Centre).

  • Educational services to visiting groups of all ages and backgrounds

  • Family History expertise and advice for individuals

  • Local knowledge: we are often the first point of contact for professionals and commercial organisations seeking historical information on their projects

  • Participation in regional and national initiatives

  • Printers’ Engineering consultations around the world.
